The only reason it still exists is due to the massive subsidies it receives. The vast majority of Spanish people, especially the young, are opposed to bullfighting as all opinion polls have shown.

Thanks Chris, and your last point is spot on.
Most of us – although not all of us – oppose bullfighting, but as it’s very much part of the Spanish culture, is still legal and does bring various benefits to the country, we try to be as balanced as possible.

The comment on your article which appears to be from someone with spelling difficulties is typical. Personally I rarely put myself out there .

Rain. Best time to come to Spain is May to Feb. If you think Spanish build quality is poor. You would have been appalled when I first came out in 97.

Enyoy your success. You worked hard for it. 18 hour days -all weekends. Most of today’s snowflakes would collapse at the thought of it.

Untouched by tourism…..the sad irony of such articles seems completely lost of the busy journos who grind them out. Maybe the reason that Pastrana is a hidden, unspoilt gem is because some keyboard pounder in need of another article hasn’t encouraged everybody to come and visit. The great pleasure of travel is the achievement of finding a special place through research and adventure, not jotting down a name on a “must-visit” list provided by a travel advisor site. Poor Pastrana – next up The Eboli Pizzaría, the Don Carlos kebab, and guides sporting black eye patches.

As surely as night follows day just the mention of the word “bullfight” ( an incredibly inapt English name for corrida) brings out the usual contingent of angry antis all a-quiver with self-righteousness Anglo-Saxon indignation. Not for one second will any attempt to address what is, like it or not, a part of Spanish culture be tolerated and anybody foolish enough to even show a flicker of curiosity is immediately branded as a monster on a par with Torquemada or Mengele. Aficionados are not just bloodthirsty drooling knuckle-draggers, but in many cases highly sophisticated and artistically aware individuals. Anglophones are guests in Andalucía – no one demands acceptance, but perhaps a little less vitriolic rhetoric . To finish – my respect to the editors of O.P for publishing an article which I am sure does not reflect their own personal views . Bravo or should I say Ole.

What a deceiving one-sided article, making the torturing to death of innocent animals sound like entertainment!
Where in this piece of ‚journalism‘ is the description of the torture of bulls starting even before the actual insanity of them being stabbed to death in the bullring? How come it doesn’t mention the torture the horses go through that are abused for this as well such as having their vocal cords cut to prevent them from screaming in horror of being forced to run around an injured panicking bull?
whether this article was paid for by those who still support this violence or the reporter is pro animal abuse- shame on olive press to not take a stand against cruelty.

Oh dear ! We now have to suffer Climate Porn Drivel on O.P. as well. I’ve been following the Climate Disaster industry for well over half a century ( back in the 70s when it was Global Cooling with the English Channel freezing over and Siberian wolves crossing into Surrey). I will file this article along with wine production in Scotland to rival Bordeaux by the year 2000 and Sahara sand dunes covering Marseille by 2005. Have you noticed all those anonymous “experts” telling us last Autumn that Málaga will become “uninhabitable” with drought by 2030 are strangely silent now that the reservoirs are 100% full a few months later. They are probably now preparing articles about Málaga becoming uninhabitable due to excess flooding. Undoubtably the Poly in Catalunya will now be assured of large grants to continue churning out this “research” ( if, of course, Barcelona doesn’t sink beneath the waves by 2040 because, to quote them, “something” hasn’t “changed”). Meanwhile in the real world normal people have to get on with their lives. There is never a word from these self-appointed prophets about the positive effects of, say, CO2. ( You have to read the reports of real climate scientists – you know, the boring ones which are difficult to read ). You might learn about the 16% extra greening of the planet, or huge gains in crop production in countries which need it. Real scientists tell us that the Roman era was much warmer than it is today, so the next time you are marvelling at the theatre in Mérida or the aqueduct in Segovia, think about how the Romans on the Peninsula did pretty well in a warmer world. We can to. ( and incidentally, the Romans did grow grapes in Scotland – for a while at least ).
